North Tapanuli earthquake: BPBD collects casualty and damage data




North Tapanuli, North Sumatra (Antara) – The North Tapanuli District Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), North Sumatra, continues to collect data on casualties and damage to buildings and public facilities following a 5.8m earthquake that hit the region on Saturday morning. .

Acting Chief of North Tapanuli BPBD Bonggas Pasaribu said here on Saturday that one person died and several people were injured as well as damage to some residential buildings and public facilities.

Basaribo told Antara that the quake caused a fire in small shops, caused landslides and damaged roads, as well as destroying residents’ homes and the HKBP Tarutung Kota Church in Tarutung city.

He revealed that “at least 50-60 meters of the road leading to the Salib al-Kasih tourist area is covered with three-meter-high landslide material.”

He pointed out that the regional government deployed heavy equipment to remove landslide materials in the Salib al-Kasih tourist area.

Moreover, he reported that the earthquake had caused damage to about one hundred meters of road sections in Simorangkir village, Siatasbarita sub-district, as well as one hundred meters of road sections in Hutapea Banuarea village, Tarutung sub-district.

“For now, we are still collecting data on the damage caused by the earthquake,” he said.

Meanwhile, North Tapanuli Secretary Indra Shat Hotwa Simarimari confirmed one person was killed, nine people were injured and 18 stalls were set on fire in Sarola Market.

“Seven of the injured are undergoing intensive treatment at Tarutong Regional Hospital, while two others are receiving treatment at a local health centre,” Simarimar said.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was shallow and was caused by the activity of the Sumatra Great Fault in the Renon sector.

Moreover, Chief Inspector General of North Sumatra Police RZ Banca Putra Simanguntak decided to travel to North Tapanuli to check the conditions of North Sumatra residents and at the same time provide health assistance to the injured.
