Small earthquake reported 2 miles east of Santa Rosa

A small earthquake was reported just after 8 p.m. about two miles east of Santa Rosa.

There were no reports of damage from the earthquake, which occurred at 8:04 pm and recorded a magnitude of 2.4, according to preliminary readings.

The Southern California Earthquake Data Center classified the earthquake as a “small” earthquake and estimated it was about 5.6 miles underground.

The USGS did not mention the earthquake on its tracker, but only mentions earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater.

According to the earthquake intensity scale published by Michigan Tech University, an earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale would be barely felt and likely not cause any damage.

Saturday night’s event comes on the heels of two larger earthquakes that occurred on September 12 along the Rodgers Creek Fault. The tremors of magnitude 4.4 and 4.3 occurred at 42-second intervals at approximately 6:39 p.m. and caused moderate damage to a number of homes in the Larkfield-Wikiup area north of Santa Rosa.

The Rodgers Creek Fault extends from San Pablo Bay at the southern tip of Sonoma County north through Santa Rosa to Healdsburg. It is also part of the Hayward Error System.

It is located along the east side of Santa Rosa – from Mount Taylor, through Doyle Park, near Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and past Santa Rosa Country Cemetery.

The last major earthquake occurred 53 years ago.

Scientists say the Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault line is likely to cause a major earthquake in the area in the coming years.

They predicted about a 33% chance of at least one earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater occurring somewhere on one of the faults, or simultaneously, by 2043.

Seismic activity on September 12 apparently shook a water source below Mark West Creek, increasing the drought-depleted current level by about six inches in the hours following the earthquake and increasing the current flow to more than seven times its previous rate.
