A new study sheds light on an earthquake fault system in the San Francisco Bay Area that most residents don’t know exist. The Foothill Thrust Belt is located deep in Silicon Valley, and researchers at Stanford University have found that they are capable of triggering a 6.9-magnitude earthquake every 250 to 300 years.

To put a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in perspective, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake measured this magnitude. It killed 63 people, injured 3,757 and was the largest earthquake to occur on the San Andreas Fault since the 1906 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey.

“It’s a reminder that we think a lot about San Andreas and Hayward, and these are very active faults, but we know there are other faults in the Bay Area that are less active but can still have earthquakes,” said Stephen DeLong, a supervisory research geologist with USGS who reviewed the study from before colleagues.

DeLong explained that seismic hazard in the SF Bay area is still dominated by faults such as the much taller San Andreas and Hayward, but intrusion into hillsides can also produce destructive shaking that should not be ignored.

Surrounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Santa Clara Valley, the Foothill Thrust Belt runs through the foothills of Silicon Valley and consists of two major thrust faults: the Shannon-Monte Vista and Berrocal-Sargent Fault. These two faults lie east of the San Andreas Fault, extending from south of Gilroy through Silicon Valley past Palo Alto.

The study, which has been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication, does not predict when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake will occur on the Foothill Thrust, nor does it say with certainty that a major earthquake will occur on them every several centuries. Instead, it reveals the shortest repetition time for an earthquake of this size (according to scientists, this time is 250 to 300 years), assuming “no other processes of seismic energy release occur along faults such as creep,” said Philip Aaron, lead author of the study. and a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. Faults can do what seismologists call “crawl,” moving slowly and constantly, never setting off an earthquake. At the other end of the spectrum, they can store energy and then explode in a massive earthquake. The team also found that a 6.5-magnitude earthquake can occur every 100 to 150 years.

Aron explained that faults or inverse faults are features in the Earth’s crust that occur when a massive slab of rock moves up and over a lower massif, which moves deeper into the ground. These are the types of faults that can form mountain ranges.

Aaron, who is a research fellow at the Research Center for Integration of Disaster Risk Management and an assistant professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, wrote. “Thrust faults are difficult to study because an earthquake does not usually rupture the ground, and this makes it difficult to understand the fault movement or the history of the fault earthquake.”

In an effort to find a new way to look at these hard-to-study flaws, the researchers created a computer simulation that took into account the landscape around the rift, such as the drainage of rivers within the surrounding mountains. They also looked at how quickly the other defects moved.

“I think the main novelty of our study is that we were able to formally correlate two seemingly independent natural processes, the topographical structure of the river drainage network in fault-lifted mountain ranges, with the rate of slip and the potential for earthquakes accumulating on those faults over time, something that has not been It is done before,” Aaron said.

DeLong called the study method smart and elegant, saying that researchers usually rely on direct evidence of fault movement, while this study used indirect data. The study results are consistent with what seismologists already know about the fault, said George Healy, a professor of geosciences at Stanford University and co-author of the study. The most exciting finding, he says, is that the research method used was successful.

“This is a new way of describing the traffic rates on these defects,” Healy told SFGATE. “Seismologists have never done this before as they use the landscape itself as well as other geographic information to determine how faults might slip.”

While this study looked at faults in an area where the USGS already has deep knowledge of earthquake risk and knows about the potential for a major earthquake on the Foothill Thrust Belt, the method used is transferable to other geographic locations where information is lacking.

For Bay Area residents every day, studying is an important reminder to get ready for the next big study.

“The message is not that we need to be more concerned,” DeLong said. “These flaws are present in our USGS models. The main thing for the public to consider is to have a plan in mind when a strong shake occurs. Being prepared for that is the most important message.”
