Fleet Week hosts a collaborative earthquake drill with Military First Responders in San Francisco

San Francisco – Fleet Week is full of fun activities and shows, but it also includes hands-on components for first responders as well. On Wednesday, he provided a rare opportunity for the San Francisco Fire Department to train in urban search and rescue efforts with military personnel.

“We’re going to have an earthquake eventually. It might be tomorrow, and it might be 100 years from now, but we need to prepare for that,” said SFFD Battalion Chief Mike Mullen. “It’s important that we learn how to work with each other and communicate, and know how each other works so that we can better handle the situation as it arises.”

SFFD personnel have trained members of the Navy and Marine Corps in a variety of skills that they will need to use if they are called upon to help after a devastating earthquake.

“When the big event happens, it’s going to tax our resources,” Mullen said. “They work to break and break concrete, shoring—that is, stabilizing collapsed buildings—and lifting and moving heavy concrete things.” “When they are called, or if they are called, at least they will have an idea of ​​the kinds of tasks they can do, how to work with us.
