Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed Mauna Loa’s back peak after the peak saw increased seismic activity, the Hawaii Island Park announced Wednesday.

According to sensors from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the area had seen 44 small earthquakes as of Thursday morning, all of which were less than 3.0 on the Richter scale.

The park said the closure was a “precautionary measure”. While the area is “experiencing mounting unrest,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirmed in a press release that “Mauna Loa is not erupting and there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.”

Elsewhere in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Kilauea eruption continues. Shield volcano erupted over a year ago, starting in September 2021.

There is no timetable for when Mauna Loa Rural Summit will reopen. However, Mauna Loa Road and Mauna Loa Lookout, located at 6,662 feet, are still open to the public. Other sections of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park also remain open.

Covering half of the island of Hawaii, Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on Earth. It has erupted 33 times since 1843, and the last eruption was in 1984. During that eruption, lava flows came within 7 miles of the city of Hilo.
