Actor Vinod Khanna’s decision to leave his family and successful career behind to become a disciple of spiritual leader Osho in 1975 has left many bewildered. His eldest son Akshay Khanna was just a small child at the time, and he was not able to comprehend his father’s decision later in his life. However, Akshay later admitted that only when he turned 15 did he understand the influence of Osho and Rajneesh in his father’s life.

When I was five years old, that was impossible [for me] to understand it. “I can understand it now,” Akshay said. “Especially when you have it all in life. And when life doesn’t seem like there is much to get. A basic fault/earthquake line has to happen within itself to make that decision. But stick with it too. One can make the decision and say that It doesn’t suit me – let’s go back.”

Akshay also corrected the belief that Vinod Khanna had returned to his family as he became ambivalent about the movement. He explained that his father returned after the US government dissolved the municipality. “It was just the fact that the municipality was disbanded and destroyed, and everyone had to find their own way. That’s when he came back. Otherwise I don’t think he would have come back again,” he said.

Akshay said he had always respected the spiritual leader Osho. “I don’t know if I could do Sanyas. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy his speech, respect his mind, oratory skills and way of thinking. I have deep respect for him,” he added.

Vinod Khanna passed away in April 2017 after suffering from cancer. After making his debut in 1968 with Mann Ka Meet, he later starred in several popular films, including Mere Apne, and Chandni, with Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor.
