The secrets of the earthquake are revealed in the Bakuratahi Valley in Hawk Bay

Researchers are gathering evidence to compile the history of earthquakes in Hawke’s Bay.

A PhD student at Victoria Charlotte Bizer University studies sediments in the Pakuratahi Valley to determine when earthquakes and tsunamis occurred in the former subduction zone.

“We are looking specifically for layers of sediment that may have been disturbed during the earthquake, or for the shells that the tsunami carried internally to the history of radioactive carbon,” Beiser said.

“The Bacuratahi Valley is one of three sites that we will investigate in Hawk Bay, and we will use the evidence we collect here to compare with the evidence in the nuclei of sediments collected abroad.”

Bizer said that Hockey Bay was a very important place to study due to the nearby subduction zone of Hikorangi.

The area is where the Pacific plate dives, or dives beneath the Australian plate. Subduction zones are a type of error that can produce very large earthquakes and tsunamis.

Hikurangi subduction zone has produced major earthquakes and tsunamis in the past.

Beeser said that their findings may help others prepare for future earthquakes.
