Gan Yu, a heroic hydropower plant worker, who survived a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Luoding County, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, was discharged from West China Hospital of Sichuan University on Saturday after receiving treatment there.

On September 5 when the earthquake hit Luding, Jan and his colleague chose not to evacuate but to remain in their positions at the hydroelectric power station, saving villages downstream from flooding. His teammate was rescued on September 8.

The 28-year-old lived alone for 17 days in the wild before being found by a villager on September 21.

Ni Taigao, the villager who found Gan, decided to join the hunt for Gan because he was familiar with the local mountains, according to a video released by China Central Television (CCTV).

On the morning of September 21, Ni heard someone screaming for help on a mountain slope and found Gan lying in the woods, CCTV reports.

Gan told Ni that he survived this ordeal by eating wild fruits and drinking spring water.

Wu Hong, vice president of the hospital, said Gan suffered multiple soft tissue injuries, several fractures, and severe infections.
