Over 100 people report shaking in Tennessee from a pair of earthquakes to hitting today

Over 100 people around Central Tennessee used the USGS “Did you feel it?” A tool on their website to report how they felt a shake today as a light earthquake shook the state; It was one of two hits today. The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 2.2, struck this morning at 1:45 am near Palmer, Tennessee; The second strike struck at 1:31 this afternoon southwest of Knoxville in Farragut and the 2.5-strong event brought 125 people to the USGS site to report how they felt.

Today’s earthquakes have struck an area between two active seismic zones: the New Madrid highly active seismic zone lies to the west, and the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone lies to the east.

While today’s quakes were very mild, they add to the number of earthquakes that have hit Tennessee in recent weeks. Dozens of earthquakes have hit Tennessee since mid-August.

Most of the earthquakes over the past 30 days have been in the western part of the state, where there has been significant seismic activity in recent weeks. Western Tennessee lies within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, an area notable for a catastrophic series of earthquakes in 1811-1812 that were centered near New Madrid County, Missouri. According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the New Madrid seismic zone is active and averages about 200 measured events per year (magnitude 1.0 or greater). Tremors large enough to be felt (magnitude 2.5 – 3.0) occur annually. On average every 18 months, a rift releases a shock of magnitude 4.0 or greater, which can cause minor local damage. An amount of 5.0 or greater occurs about once every decade, can cause significant damage and can be felt in many cases.

According to the USGS, the magnitude of earthquakes in the NMSZ is about 300% more than normal this summer. While the magnitude was high, the intensity was low and the earthquake caused no damage or injuries.

While eastern Tennessee is not part of the NMSZ, they also experience earthquakes from time to time. The USGS says western Tennessee has a higher frequency of devastating earthquake tremors, and the risk is not low in eastern Tennessee. In the eastern part of the state, the US Geological Survey says this area will likely experience 50-100 devastating earthquakes over 10,000 years.
