5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes western Indonesia

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 jolted western Indonesia’s Banten province on Sunday, meteorological agency and officials said, with no initial reports of damage or injuries, the meteorological agency and officials said.

The quake was felt in nearby West Java province and the country’s capital, Jakarta, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said.

The agency said the quake occurred at 17:02 Jakarta time (1202 GMT), with its epicenter 26 km southwest of Lebak district of Banten province and 12 km below the sea floor.

She said the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

Indonesian Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency spokesman Abdul Mahari said there were no initial reports of damage or injuries, but a risk assessment of the earthquake’s impact was still being carried out.

“So far we have not received information about the damaged houses or buildings. But (our personnel) are still investigating the effects of the earthquake,” he told Xinhua by phone.

The quake was felt in Banten County, but in a short time, said Nana Suryana, head of the provincial disaster management agency’s executive unit.

So far, no houses or buildings have been damaged or injured after the quake. However, the official told Xinhua by phone that assessment of the earthquake’s impact was still underway.
