New evidence suggests that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs triggered massive earthquakes that shook the Earth for months.

By India Today Web Desk: 66 million years after the 10-kilometre-wide asteroid hit Earth, details about the massive impact are still being revealed. New research indicates that the Chicxulub effect, apart from causing the extinction of the dinosaurs, also caused an earthquake that shook the planet for months.

The earthquake, according to the most recent evidence, released 1,023 joules of energy, which is 50,000 times more than the energy released in the 9.1-magnitude Sumatra earthquake in 2004. Evidence has been unearthed from the infamous Cretaceous and Paleogene spurs (the limit of the extinction event). Collective in Texas, Alabama and Mississippi.

The evidence adds to an older study by Hermann Bermdis, a geologist at Montclair State University in New Jersey. Evidence of massive earthquakes was found on the coast of Gorgonella Island, about 3,000 kilometers southwest of the asteroid’s crash site. The researchers found that sand, mud and small ocean creatures built up on the ocean floor when the asteroid impacted. The American Geological Society said in a statement, “The layers of mud and sandstone as deep as 1,015 meters below the sea floor have been subjected to the soft sediment deformation that has been preserved in the rocky outcrops today.”

Bermdez found that the defects and distortion caused by the vibration persist through the ball-rich layer that was deposited after the impact, indicating that the vibration should persist for weeks and months. Bermdis explains that the section that he discovered on Gorgonilla Island is a great place to study the K-Pg boundary because it is one of the best preserved and was located in the depths of the ocean, so it was not affected by the tsunami waves.

Similar evidence was also found in Mexico where the strong shaking of the plates caused water-saturated sediments to flow like a liquid. Meanwhile, in parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Texas, he found faults and fissures likely related to the massive earthquake along with tsunami deposits in the many outcrops of the massive waves that followed.

A recent study also hinted that the asteroid harmed not only the Earth, but the moon as well. Samples brought to Earth from the Moon by China’s Chang’e-5 spacecraft revealed that asteroid impacts on the Moon’s surface precisely coincided with some of the largest meteor impacts on Earth.
