The asteroid collision that led to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago caused massive earthquakes across the planet that lasted “weeks to months,” according to new research.

The study, presented at the Geological Society of America Communications on Sunday, evaluated the effects of the asteroid impact Chicxulub and found that it released enormous energy, enough to generate giant earthquakes of more than 10 magnitude.

Researchers, including researchers from Montclair State University in the United States, say that the asteroid strike that formed a crater 180-200 km in diameter in the Yucatan Peninsula in North America also caused a tsunami.

In the study, scientists analyzed geological records related to this time period in sedimentary sample sections from Colombia, Mexico, and the United States.

They found that sediment deposits from this time period were affected by soil liquefaction, which occurs when loosely packed sediments near the Earth’s surface lose strength due to seismic activities.

The researchers also found evidence of deformation and disruption of soft sediments in geological samples from this time period in the studied areas.

The researchers say that these results explain the magnitude of seismic activity as a result of the impact of the asteroid Chicxulub, and also reveal signs of tectonic changes in the Earth’s plate.

The new discovery also reflects recent research, published in the journal AGU Advancest, that the Chicxulub effect caused global “meter-high” tsunamis, the likes of which have not been seen since.

The study noted that the waves were “30,000 times more active” than any modern-day tsunami.

“The areas closest to the impact have seen waves as high as 30 to several hundreds of metres, which lead to a lot of coastal flooding,” Molly Ringer, one of the study’s authors told The Independent last week.

This study found that within the first 10 minutes of the asteroid’s collision with the Earth’s basic rocks, sediments and oceans were displaced tens of kilometers above the atmosphere, and also in the other direction, tens of kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

The latest discoveries provide evidence that the impact of space rocks released energy equivalent to 1023 joules – about 10 billion atomic bombs of the type used in World War II – causing the “biggest earthquakes” our planet experienced during this era.

“The results demonstrate intense seismic activity for weeks to months after the lightning strike,” the scientists wrote in a summary of the research presented at the conference.
