5.1-magnitude earthquake hits Faizabad, Afghanistan; Third in 4 months

The National Center for Seismology said that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the Afghan city of Faizabad on Tuesday morning.

The earthquake struck 89 km east of Faizabad and was at a depth of 112 km.

“5.1 magnitude earthquake, occurred on 10-11-2022, 04:53:06 IST, Latitude: 36.91, Length: 71.53, Depth: 112 km, Location: 89 km ESE from Faizabad, Afghanistan,” National Center for Seismology chirp.

This earthquake comes on the heels of the June 22 earthquake that hit southeastern Afghanistan, causing widespread destruction in the already vulnerable areas of Paktika, Paktia and Khost provinces.

A second 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred on July 18, with its epicenter in the Spira region, just 3 km from the epicenter of the June 22 earthquake.

In addition to the loss of life and devastating injuries, the earthquake destroyed vital infrastructure – including homes, health facilities, schools and water systems – leaving thousands vulnerable to further damage.

The multi-sectoral emergency earthquake appeal estimates that approximately 362,000 people live in high impact areas, while needs assessments conducted so far indicate that more than 100,000 people have been directly affected, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

A total of US$110.3 million is urgently needed to load life-saving response activities for an initial period of three months (July-September), with priority given to the worst affected areas in Paktika and Khost districts.
