Earthquake shakes Kalgoorlie Boulder, Washington as locals wake up to tremors

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake gave locals in a mining community in Western Australia a rude wake-up call when it struck outside town.

The earthquake hit Kalgoorlie Boulder at about 5.30am on Tuesday at a depth of 3 km, according to Geoscience Australia.

More than 170 local residents reported feeling the quake in GeoScience Australia’s monitoring system, with the strongest alerts coming from those in the suburbs of Kalgoorlie, southern Kalgoorlie and Piccadilly.

Living in Kalgoorlie, you’ve always thought, what another mining blast, Robert Koenig-Lack, a Kalgoorlie resident, said on Twitter.

“But I woke up to the house shaking at 5.31. Just an earthquake of 2.9 Mag. Good morning.”

“If there’s an aftershock, there’s a very good chance the public won’t feel it,” chief seismologist Hadi Ghafimi told ABC.

Geoscience Australia also recorded a 3.3-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 km at 4.39 a.m. on Tuesday in the Lake Mackay region of Washington state.
