Taliban says 5.1 magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Afghanistan

Islamabad (AFP) – An earthquake measuring 5.1 degrees hit the Afghan city of Faizabad, the capital of the northeastern province of Badakhshan, on Tuesday, a Taliban official said.

Abdul Wahid Rayan, director of Taliban Bakhtar News Agency, said the epicenter of the quake was Shaghanan district and it was felt by people in other parts of the province.

He did not have any information about casualties or damage from the quake, but local media reported that the quake was felt about 350 kilometers away in the northern province of Balkh.

In June, a powerful earthquake triggered another crisis in the faltering country, highlighting the Taliban’s limited capabilities and isolation. UN officials said at the time that 770 people were killed, while the Taliban put the death toll at 1,150.

Exhausted aid groups, already keeping millions of Afghans alive, rushed supplies for the June earthquake victims, but most countries responded tepidly to Taliban calls for international help.

Cutting international funding to Afghanistan has deepened the country’s economic collapse and fueled its humanitarian crises.
