Court blames earthquake victims for deaths in Italy

On Wednesday, Agence France-Presse reported, citing media reports, that an Italian court blamed the victims of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake for their deaths, and said that compensation for their relatives should be reduced.

The agency stated that this “reckless behavior” made them “30 percent responsible” for their deaths, the Mesajiro daily reported.

Maria Grazia Piccinini, a lawyer by profession and mother of 25-year-old student Ellaria Rambaldi who died, called Tuesday’s ruling “ridiculous” and said experts had played down fears of a deadly earthquake.

“My daughter was as reassuring as anyone else,” Piccinini was quoted by AFP as telling Corriere della Sera newspaper, as reported by AFP, adding that she would appeal the ruling.

Seven members of Italy’s Commission for the Prevention of Major Hazards were initially convicted over advice given to residents prior to the disaster, although all but one of those were subsequently rescinded.

The earthquake injured 1,600 people and left at least 80,000 people homeless. L’Aquila’s elegant medieval, Renaissance and Baroque plazas and buildings have been reduced to ruins.
