Cal OES officials take the earthquake simulator for a ride before the Great California ShakeOut

San Francisco (KGO) – The Great California ShakeOut is only one week away on October 20.

Before that happens, the California Office of Emergency Services is touring six cities across the state to help people prepare for earthquakes.

Gary Windham has lived his fair share of earthquakes in California.

“It was a bit bigger than I was prepared for but it was kind of fun too,” said Wyndham, a Palo Alto resident.

But on Thursday, a 7.0 earthquake was felt in the earthquake simulation from Cal OES.

“We’ve had a number of big earthquakes in the last century,” said Larry Collins, MP. “We’ve had a bit of a gap recently in large earthquakes in highly urbanized areas of the state, but we know that’s a possibility.” Fire Chief at Cal OES Fire and Rescue.

That’s why Cal OES is now taking this tool for a spin, reminding people of the three things you should do when you feel an earthquake: stop, cover and wait.

“If you happen to fall into a building that has already failed, getting under something heavy, cover falling and waiting also helps ensure that you end up in an empty, survivable space if there is a building failure,” Collins said.

Taking these steps means that firefighters can find you hours, or even days later, alive in an empty, survivable space, Collins says.

“People lived up to 16 days in collapsed buildings and were pulled out alive,” he said.

“We hope to encourage Californians to take all possible approaches to earthquake preparedness because all you have is seconds,” said Yvonne Durantes, Cal OES’s senior emergency services coordinator.

Keep in mind that this tour comes just a week before the Great California ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill.

“On October 20 at 10:20 a.m., all individuals who have registered for Great California Training Online will receive a notification that is a test notification and at that moment, all individuals will participate in rehearsal, drop, cover and continue,” Durants said.
