San Francisco is preparing for the next big earthquake

A team of San Francisco firefighters spent Saturday morning with citizens preparing for the next big earthquake. The team was identified by green helmets and jackets emblazoned with “NERT,” also known as Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams. James Torres reports from KTVU.

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco is doing everything it can to prepare for the next big emergency, specifically the next big earthquake.

A team of firefighters spent Saturday morning with citizens on how to do it. They were identified by green helmets and jackets emblazoned with “NERT,” also known as Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams.

“The things we do are low-risk and low-key,” said Gary Pegueros, a NERT volunteer and advisory board member. “We don’t do anything that would put us at risk or hurt us.”

First responders know that Bay Area communities will, at some point, be in danger again at the hands of Mother Nature, it’s only a matter of time.

When that happens, NERT will help you. Born at 33, the team makes sure first responders have support. The idea came on the heels of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which recorded a 6.9-magnitude earthquake. It destroyed buildings in the marina and caused damage to Candlestick Park during the World Championship game between the Bay Area MLB teams, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics.

“When the neighbors are able to help the neighbors, it takes the burden off the fire department to respond to every citizen within the city,” said Lt. Hashem Anderson of the San Francisco Fire Department. He also works as a NERT coach.

For about two hours across the campus of St. Ignatius’ School in the city’s Outer Sunset, teams worked on rehearsals. Some involved treating patients with minor and serious injuries. Others were involved in rescuing victims from the collapsed wreckage.

“Everyone has been trained in what’s called triage,” said Captain Brandon Tom. He is the chief in charge of NERT.

“How to help citizens in a medical emergency, lifesaving skills such as airway control, breathing control, and shock control. Learn simple skills, how to remove heavy objects in people’s way.”

Since its inception, NERT has trained approximately 25,000 people in San Francisco. Saturday morning rehearsals usually take place regularly, but it was the first session since the start of the pandemic.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and work together,” Bigeros said.

“We have to work together as a team. I can’t do it alone, you can’t do it alone, so it’s all about team effort.”

NERT certification is free and open to anyone who wants to participate. But in order to help others, training emphasized that you must first help yourself and your family.

“We spend a lot of time working on disaster preparedness, coming up with a plan, and mitigating risks,” Lieutenant Anderson said. “So the first step in any emergency is to make sure you have a plan. Then you can prevent having to call 911 the first time.”
