Part of Pāhala Post Office closed due to earthquake damage: Big Island Now

Two earthquakes that rocked the Big Island on Friday also damaged the Bahala Post Office, forcing it to close the retail lobby indefinitely.

The post office reported damage to some indoor lighting fixtures. The retail lobby will reopen once the Postal Department determines that the facility is safe for staff and customers.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and appreciate our customers’ understanding and support,” Gina Gomez, Postal Manager at Bahala, said in a press release. “The safety of our employees, customers and mail is our top priority. We will reopen our retail lobby as soon as possible.”

During the closure, customers requiring retail services are asked to visit Nāʻālehu, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park or Volcano post offices.

As the mailbox lobby of the Pāhala facility is not affected, mail delivery to over 600 of the facility’s mailbox customers will continue uninterrupted.

Pāhala Post Office is located at 96-3163 Pikake Street in Pāhala.

According to a Hawaii Emergency Management Agency feed, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Friday on the southeast side of Mauna Loa on the Big Island, about 5 miles south of Pahala. This earthquake came shortly after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake shook the same area, less than 4 miles south-southwest of Pahala.

Several other earthquakes continued in the 2 to 4 magnitude range after the two larger earthquakes.
