Two earthquakes hit the Big Island

A pair of earthquakes shook the Big Island on Friday and closed the retail lobby at the Bahala Post Office.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that at 9:07 a.m. Friday, two earthquakes originated from the southern coast of the Big Island about 4.3 miles south of Pahala.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6 and its epicenter was located about 8 miles underground. Twenty-four seconds after that, a second 5.0-magnitude earthquake occurred, centering around a point 4.6 miles underground just under Highway 11 south of Pahala.

The two earthquakes can be felt as far north as Hilo. HVO reported that they felt “to a lesser degree” across the state.

The earthquakes destroyed some indoor lighting fixtures in the retail lobby of the Bahala Post Office. It will reopen once the Postal Administration determines the facility is safe for its employees and customers, the USPS said in a press release.

The USPS said the mailbox lobby was not affected, so mail delivery to the facility’s 600-plus mailbox customers will continue uninterrupted.

During the temporary closure, customers in Bahala who require retail services are asked to visit Naalehu, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or Volcano post office.

Julia Neal, of Pahala and owner of the Kao Calendar, said the earthquakes have caused disruptions across the region. The outage affected part of the city for several hours, and although power was restored, the outage resulted in the closure of the Pahala branches of the Bank of Hawaii and Longs Pharmacy.

Neil said some local residents have checked their homes for damage to water lines, and some businesses have reported possible minor damage from earthquakes.

“I spoke to a farmer who said they are refilling their water tanks now in case Mauna Loa erupts,” Neil said.

HVO reported that the two earthquakes—and many of the weaker aftershocks I felt in their aftermath—appear to be associated with “modifications” along the southeast flank of Mauna Loa.

Over the past month, increased seismic activity at Mauna Loa has led to an increase in small earthquakes detected at the volcano’s summit.

Friday’s large earthquakes did not occur in the same place as most of those minor earthquakes, which occurred largely under the volcano’s northwest flank. However, HVO reported that it is not clear if Friday’s quakes are directly related to the Mauna Loa disturbance.

On Friday, HVO maintained that there were no signs of an imminent eruption and added that it would continue to monitor the volcano closely for any changes.
