5.1 earthquake strikes during Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano eruption

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale on Friday struck Mauna Loa in Hawaii, the largest active volcano on the planet that scientists say is in “a state of increasing turbulence.”

People all over the Big Island reported that they felt light shaking from the earthquake.

Mitch Roth, Mayor of Hawaii County, said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

At least eight smaller aftershocks followed the quake in the Kao Forest Reserve near the island’s southeastern town of Pahala, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the series began with a 4.6-magnitude earthquake seconds before the larger quake.

USGS models estimated a low probability of damage.

Mauna Loa is not erupting and there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time. “However, Mauna Loa remains in a state of increasing turbulence as evidenced by increased earthquake activity and summit swell,” the USGS said in its daily volcano update on Friday. “The disturbance is likely caused by a renewed introduction of magma into the Mauna Loa summit reservoir system.”

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory have been monitoring Mauna Loa closely for changes.

Hundreds of responses to the USGS seismic site reported light-to-light shaking across the vast island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat in Hawaii.
