This update was produced by the Papua New Guinea Disaster Management Team (DMT) in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from September 17 to October 16, 2022. The following updates will be released only when important new information becomes available.

Highlights

Official assessments from Morop, Madang and the eastern highlands indicated 21 total deaths and 30 injured.

1,076 permanent, semi-permanent and traditional homes damaged or destroyed.

10 million PGK (US$2.8 million) from the Papua New Guinea government and US$100,000 from the Chinese Red Cross Society have been provided to the Minister of Defense and Chairman of the National Disaster Committee.

The Murwab County Government has distributed basic shelter kits to some Markham County villages.

Status Overview

Provincial disaster management authorities in Morobi, Madang and the Eastern Highlands have published official assessment reports. The aggregates for the common indicators between the reports are as follows:

The Morobe Assessment Report indicated that a total of 3,211 people were affected and 191 food parks were damaged or destroyed in 8 counties, namely Lay, Hon, Markham, Naib, Kaboom, Wau/Wariya, Twi/Siasi and Finshavn. Property damage was sustained at 7 educational institutions in Markham and Hoon counties. Schools in the Markham area have been suspended. Other affected community infrastructures include water sources, power lines, public buildings, sidewalks, and roads. Besides damage to sidewalks and roads, the increased risks of landslides and landslides also affect the accessibility of affected areas. IDPs are currently turning to relatives or friends.

The Madang district administration reported that 5 educational institutions in the affected districts, Dyke Bridge in Recoast District and Dilope Bridge in Somkar District were adversely affected.

According to the Eastern Highlands Assessment Report, student housing at Goroka University has been so damaged that 1,600 resident students were forced to evacuate and stay in a number of classrooms, the university library was similarly affected along with schools, churches, other health facilities, water tanks, food and cash crops gardens and bridges in Kainantu and Obura districts / Wonerara, as well as roads, particularly the Okuk Highway between Kainantu Town and Qassam Pass.

Between September 17 and October 14, the National Command Center received a total of 24 calls. No calls have been received after 28 September. One appeal on 17 September reported the discovery of a body buried in a landslide. Four calls were reported on destroyed property. The remaining calls were just a follow-up to previous calls and information from other sources. There were 8 calls from Morobe, 7 from Madang, 3 from the Eastern Highlands, 2 from the Western Highlands and one each from East Sepik, West Sepik, East New Britain and Oro.
