SCEMD releases new resource for Earthquake Preparedness Week

Charleston, South Carolina (WCBD) – It’s Earthquake Preparedness Week here in South Carolina, and the world’s largest earthquake drill, “Shake Out,” is scheduled for Thursday, October 20.

At 10:20 a.m. that morning, nearly two million people across the United States will take part in the exercises.

In preparation for upcoming training, the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management today announced a new earthquake preparedness resource.

The new website, Earthquake, is easily accessible and contains all the earthquake information residents need in one central location.

According to Earthquake, South Carolina is one of the most seismically active locations in the Southeast, and while you can’t predict when an earthquake will occur, you can be prepared by being told.

The site aims to detail the science behind an earthquake, and explain the difference between magnitude and intensity.

It also lets residents know what to do before, during and after an earthquake.

The website contains multiple resources such as an interactive disaster toolkit and advice on what to do in different locations, such as at home, outside or in the car when an earthquake strikes.

Only this year, officials say, we’ve seen 60 to 80 earthquakes in our state, and while the majority have been low in magnitude, it’s still important to be prepared:

Officials also say that if we were hit by an earthquake today like we experienced during the Charleston earthquake in 1886, it would be one of the largest disasters the region has ever seen, with 45,000 casualties expected.
