Earthquake Safety at Coquitlam Harbor: Be Prepared for Disasters

Drop, cover, and hold practice Thursday, October 20 during ShakeOut BC, the county’s largest earthquake drill.

A massive earthquake could shatter Vancouver’s metro infrastructure, prompting cities across British Columbia to call for preparedness and safety plans for residents, schools and businesses.

In Coquitlam Harbor, residents are encouraged to participate in the largest earthquake drill in British Columbia history on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m.

This is when the Great British Columbia ShakeOut takes place.

ShakeOutBC, organized by the BC Earthquake Alliance, provides residents the opportunity to practice the earthquake protocol ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ and also ensure they are prepared for an earthquake at home, school, office and on the road.

Each year, about 5,000 earthquakes are recorded in Canada—many in the seismically active region around British Columbia. Most are small, but at least nine in or near Canada have recorded magnitudes of seven or more in the past century.

In Prince George, for example, a “lightly felt” earthquake of magnitude 3.4 was recorded in September 2022.

Today, the City of Port Coquitlam encourages all residents to take exercise in their homes, schools or workplaces at 10:20am.

Here’s how to share:

Visit shakeoutbc.ca to register as a participant and download resources (including sound effects to play during training and emergency preparedness information). Encourage your family, neighbors, and colleagues to participate in the exercises. At 10:20 a.m. on October 20, practice the “drop, cover, and hang” protocol: fall to the ground; Take cover by sitting under a desk/table (or cover your face and head with your arms and bend over the inside corner of the building); And wait for 60 seconds. During this time, look around and imagine what will happen during the earthquake. What could fall on you or get hurt? Write down the tasks that need to be done after the exercise, (eg, tie large pieces of furniture) and then, practice what you will do after the shaking stops.

How to prepare for an earthquake:

Do a ‘danger chase’ for things that might fall during earthquakes, and secure them. Create a personal or family disaster plan (visit gov.bc.ca/preparedbc for information). Organize or update your emergency supply kits. Keep in mind that you may not be at home when an earthquake strikes, and that you may need to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours afterward.
