Coronavirus: 16 million people in northern Italy – BBC News
Italy has placed 16 million people under quarantine, fighting the spread of coronavirus.
Everyone living in Lombardy and 14 other central and northern provinces will need special travel permits. Milan and Venice are both affected.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the country.
The measures, the most radical outside of China, will last until April 3.
Italy has seen the highest case of coronavirus in Europe and experienced a sharp rise in infections on Saturday. Forty new measures affect a quarter of Italy's population and center in the north of the developing country.
