According to the Iranian Seismological Center, an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Khoy city in western Azerbaijan province northwest of Iran on October 5, 2022 at 03:51 AM local time. So far, the region has hit 42 aftershocks (the largest with 4.6 Richter at 17:21 local time). The affected area consists of 2 counties and 8 cities (53 villages) and has a population of about 3,195 families (11,288 people). Western Azerbaijan is the worst affected province, with Khoy, Salmas and Shebara among the worst affected. Murtaza Goli Kennedy is the most affected village located in Khoy City. The people of Eastern Azerbaijan felt upset. Iran is a country prone to many disasters, especially earthquakes, due to active faults in several regions of the country. The fault activated in this area that caused this earthquake is called the Siyah Cheshme-Khoy. One person was injured by the rubble and 1,126 people were injured while fleeing their homes.
