Earthquake simulator encourages Californians to feel the force of earthquakes in order to prepare

China, Los Angeles (KABC) – Earthquakes can be frightening to those who may not have experienced them before, but California has resources to prepare you.

The California Office of Emergency Services set up an earthquake simulator in Chinatown Wednesday afternoon as part of the “Great California Shakeout Tour 2022” initiative.

The simulator gives people a realistic sense of what an earthquake can really feel. The simulator’s intensity simulates earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 to 7.0.

“Step one? Surviving the earthquake itself,” said Laurie Nizora, deputy director of planning, preparedness, and prevention at Cal OES.

Most Southern Californians have never experienced an earthquake of this magnitude, and as a reminder, most injuries from major earthquakes occur from falling elements.

California Earthquake Warning is the nation’s first publicly available statewide warning system that can give Californians critical seconds to shelter before they feel the shake.

The system, operated by Cal OES, uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before you even feel them.

“It was a lot more rampant than I thought,” said Diane Valero, who rode the simulator in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon. “She was a little stronger than I thought.”

While the exact timing of the next big earthquake can’t be predicted, we know it will happen one day.

Cal OES officials hope people will take the risks seriously and download the MyShake app, which provides early warning of an earthquake — the critical seconds that can save lives and prevent injuries.
