“Drop, Cover and Hang”: An annual earthquake drill will be conducted in the metropolitan area and beyond

At businesses, schools, government buildings and other sites in the DMV and around the country, earthquake drills will take place on Thursday.

The West Coast of the United States may be known for being epicenter of earthquakes, but the metropolitan area can also experience it. That’s why at businesses, schools, government buildings and other sites in the region and around the country, earthquake drills will take place on Thursday.

The Great ShakeOut Earthquake Exercise is the annual event sponsored by the USGS, FEMA, and the National Science Foundation that encourages people to “get down, cover up, and stay.”

According to FEMA, “Drop” means a person should fall on their hands and knees wherever they are and “cap” means a person should cover their neck and head with one arm and one hand, as they crawl under a nearby table or desk. Finally, “holding” means using the arm and the other hand to hold that table or desk until the shaking stops.

Although uncommon, the metropolitan area has experienced earthquakes, such as the 2.0-magnitude earthquake that shook central Maryland earlier this month. In 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Virginia, caused damage to the Washington Monument and Washington National Cathedral.

“The severity of the 2011 earthquake caused two presidential-declared disasters awarded to the Commonwealth of Virginia and Washington, D.C. totaling more than $47 million in public assistance and approximately $17 million in combined individual assistance funding commitments,” FEMA press release ( FEMA) Advertiser.
