Shake It Off: The annual earthquake exercise, “The Great ShakeOut,” to be held on Thursday

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency encourages Mississippi residents of all ages to participate in its annual “Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m.

This self-driving seismic drill can be done at home, school, or at work. To participate, individuals are asked to stop what they are doing at 10:20 AM and complete the following:

1. Fall on the floor or the ground.

2. Take cover under a strong object.

3. Wait for the shaking to stop.

Individuals, groups and businesses wishing to participate are encouraged to register at www.shakeout.org. Upon registration, participants will receive an email with information on how to plan exercises and more tips on preparing for earthquakes.

According to the Great ShakeOut website, nearly 20 million people in the United States have signed up to participate in the event, including more than 274,000 Mississippians.

MEMA is also releasing Axel the Earthquake Ant, drawn by Marshall Ramsay. As the organization continues to grow a culture of preparedness, Axel serves as a mascot for the MEMA Earthquake Program to expand the Office of Preparedness’s reach to students across the state. The number of earthquakes known to occur within Mississippi’s borders is small, but its proximity to the New Madrid seismic zone makes it essential to prepare.
