West Tennessee Students Participate in the Great ShakeOut National Earthquake Training

JACKSON, Tennessee – Organizations across the country are preparing for a “big shakeup.”

East Elementary School in Jackson has participated in earthquake protocols through Great ShakeOut 2022.

The Great ShakeOut is an organization that prepares businesses, schools, agencies, facilities in healthcare and many more for a safety plan.

Part of the education in the plan is to teach and stick to drop and cover techniques.

When schools like East Elementary offer safety plans like Great ShakeOut, they enable children to take knowledge home.

“We are asking our students, of course, to share what they have learned here at school please to share with their parents as well, so that parents also know how to keep themselves and their children safe during the earthquake,” Principal Amanda Brabham said.

Regardless of the organization, a plan is needed and, in the event of an emergency, it can save a life.

“We are excited to do this exercise because we want our kids to know what to do in the event of a real earthquake, because here in Tennessee, you know, we have earthquakes from time to time,” Principal Brabham said. “So we want our students to be prepared.”

Great ShakeOut provides resources for participants such as media tools for education, stats, and tips.

Students were also able to take the resources home to review what they had learned with their families.
