The Te Awamutu Museum was closed after a seismic assessment deemed it an earthquake hazard.

Waipa County Council vacated the museum and the adjacent councilmen’s building, after work began to replace the roof and windows.

CEO Gary Deet made the eviction call on Friday, after the building received a Class D rating, meaning it was at 20 percent of the national building standard.

“I simply wasn’t prepared to put any employee or any member of the public at risk,” he said.

In the event of an earthquake, Grade D buildings present a risk to their occupants of 10 to 25 times what would be expected from a new building.

Approximately 78 employees are affected across the Council’s Service Delivery and Community Services team.

“We will be able to house the staff elsewhere and some will be working from home for a short while while we work on it,” Diet said.

“Except for the museum staff, I don’t think it would cause much of a disturbance.”

He said the museum will be closed until further notice.

He said that while the shutdown has been uncomfortable and disappointing, the focus now will be on determining what kind of remedial action is needed to reopen.

“For now, our priority is to work alongside Mana whenua, the Kingi Tuheitia Office and the Te Awamutu Museum Trust Board to ensure that all forms of Taonga are taken care of in the museum.”
