Big Ol ‘Earthquake Drill’ The Great ShakeOut’ Happening Thursday Morning

Your trip to BART may have been disrupted on Thursday morning for a noble cause, as this year’s biggest earthquake drill, Great ShakeOut, is happening all over California and the world at large.

BART riders may experience strange delays Thursday morning, but don’t worry, this is just a test of BART’s ShakeAlert system. As seen below, at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, “trains will slow to 27 mph and stop briefly,” according to Bart. “We will then make a system-wide announcement to encourage riders to prepare for the earthquakes.”

It’s all part of Great ShakeOut, a worldwide earthquake training that takes place on the 3rd of October every year at 10:20 a.m. local time. And while it’s around the world (they’ll sound tsunami sirens in parts of Washington state), earthquake preparedness is a particularly relevant topic in the Bay Area, where Tuesday was the 33rd anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people and injured 63. Almost 3700 more.

“Get ready and join the millions of people participating in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills around the world on October 20,” the US Geological Service says in its online announcement. During the training, participants practice “drop, cover and wait!” and other recommended safety measures to be taken during an earthquake.

So yeah, this is a glorified version of the old “stop, drop and cover” from the elementary school days, except for a much bigger one. “More than 44.1 million people worldwide are set to participate in the event, according to data from shakeout.org,” according to a Chronicle report. “The USGS website shows that 9.4 million participants registered for this year’s Great ShakeOut across California, surpassing 7.6 million participants last year.”

So since it’s earthquake drills day, it’s a good day to remind people that you can sign up for text alerts and earthquake alert apps, some of which give up to 20 seconds in advance of an impending earthquake. And it’s wise to have a ready-made kit or “travel bag” on hand, because we’ll likely be worth a big one some day or a year.
