Students drop, cover and grab for earthquake safety

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – At 10:20 a.m., what looked like a freight train roared into Room 190 at Denali Montessori in Anchorage, prompting students to act out what to do in the event of an earthquake.

The school was one of more than 110,000 participants in the Great Alaska Shakeout according to shakeout.org, which promotes exercises around the world focused on earthquake education and emergency preparedness.

“So we all as a teacher did our earthquake drills. So we all trained our ducks, cover and hold,” said teacher Erin Arno.

Arnault teaches the first, second and third grade integration class in elementary school. On Thursday, she spent her morning teaching students about earthquake safety and showing them what to do in the event of an earthquake.

Then via the school intercom, the earthquake drills were announced schoolwide.

“Cover your head from behind with your arms,” Arnaud said. “Get down on your knees.”

Then Arno showed the students how to get on their knees “like bugs,” cover their heads, and instructed them to take cover under the tables.

“Try to sit under the table a little more,” Arnault said as her students gathered to wait for it to be over.

Arno said exercises like the Great Alaska Shakeout are important for students to learn, especially in Anchorage where earthquakes occur frequently.

Arno spent 16 years teaching at Bethel, having never had earthquake training. Still, she says, it’s important training for students in Anchorage, just as they do fire drills and other safety drills.

“I get them to practice when there’s a stag on the field and we have to stay inside. So we’re in Alaska, this Alaskan stuff happens. So we all want to be prepared,” Arno said.

It is especially important to practice these exercises, as earthquakes can occur at any time – even during the school year. The November 2018 earthquake occurred at the start of the school day. Making children know how to handle this situation in a classroom setting is critical to ensuring their safety.
