Earthquake: Manipur experiences mild tremors of 4.4 on the Richter scale

On Friday, the northeastern state of Manipur recorded a slight seismic activity. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred around 9:30 p.m. The National Center for Seismology reported that the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers underground.

The National Center of Seismology tweeted, “A 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred on 10/21-2022, 21:30:40 India Time, Latitude: 24.15 & Length: 94.42, Depth: 10 km, Location: 75 km ESE from Moirang, Manipur, India”

The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded 75 km east-southeast of Moirang in Manipur.

Manipur is located in the “Extremely Hazardous” Zone (Zone V) according to the seismic zone map of India, indicating that the region is at very high risk in terms of earthquake exposure.

The state is located on the eastern extension of the Himalayas which also coincides with the tectonic margin between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Occasional tremors in the area are common given the geological structure and geographical location.

The Himalayan mountain range owes its origin to the movements of the tectonic plates and is therefore prone to earthquakes. The Eurasian and Indian plates collided to form the highest mountain fury in the world.

Plate tectonic movement continues sometimes causing compressive forces to cause tremors in places along the Himalayas.
