Australia’s best-selling spinner, Julie Raphael, imagines the day the Meekering earthquake

The events at Meekering on the morning of October 14, 1968, when a massive earthquake struck Whitbelt, are woven into the fabric of Julie Raphael’s family history.

“I was only one and I have no memories of it but my mom has,” she says. “We were living in Kalgoorlie at the time and my mum told me dad was out on a ladder and she didn’t know whether to save the kids or what to do. There was a lot going on, kids on high chairs and that kind of thing.”

A few years ago, Raphael started writing a short story based on her fantasies of that day. The Best Australian Spinning competition presented her with the perfect opportunity to return to and complete her unfinished business.

“I honestly don’t know why I started writing it,” she says. “I think like a lot of things, different elements build up in your mind. You read things now and then because they’re still having tremors, so I’m sure something’s going on.”

“When I reread it – which I did last night – it still stirred up a lot of emotions for me. I don’t know why but I think it has to do with the characters.”

“I just thought about the way they were going to experience it, and in fact they all face huge challenges – if that is the word – in different ways, especially the woman who lives alone in the country.”

None of the characters are based on a real person. She laughs, “The taxpayer of the country, I met him several times.” “I don’t know where the idea of ​​a snake chasing the shopkeeper came from, but that seemed very natural.”

Raffaele is a filmmaker who grew up in East Fremantle. She remembers being an avid reader as a child and has an affinity for literature-based learning at school. Her college career took her to Curtin, to what was then Swinburne College in Melbourne, and eventually back to Murdoch University to earn a master’s degree in filmmaking.

Her writing describes her work as a film director as being extensively researched and free to write short stories.

“It’s a purer form of the idea, more creative, and not constrained by reality,” she says. “Any research has to be spot on. You can take some liberties once you have done research but the short story comes from the place of invention.”

The Best Australian Yarn, run by The West Australian in partnership with the Minderoo Foundation, launched in February and allows professional and amateur short story writers to compete for a $50,000 prize, the richest of its kind in the world.

Raffaele and the other authors in the top 50 have a chance to win the grand prize of $30,000. Nine other finalists shortlisted for the overall prize will each receive $1,000 each, each receiving a WA prize of $4,000, Best Australian Regional Entry $3,000 and Best Youth Entry $2,000.

The award jury is chaired by The West Australian Editor-in-Chief, Anthony de Sigley, and includes Mindero Foundation co-founder Nicola Forrest, author Robert Drew, and publishers Terry Ann White and Rachel Bensalah.

Winners will be announced on November 18.
