ShakeOut’s annual drill spreads the word about earthquakes | local news

The Great Check Out exercise took place in the central United States Thursday to help educate people about the importance of preparing for catastrophic earthquakes.

Henry County Emergency Management Agency Administrator Ron Watkins said, “Our earthquake threat is real, sixty miles from the New Madrid earthquake zone. This is one of the most seismically active areas each year.”

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) has enrolled many businesses, communities, individuals, organizations and schools in ShakeOut training so they can learn how to prevent damage and injury in the event of a catastrophic earthquake.

“The Great ShakeOut in the Central United States is an opportunity for all Tennessee residents to take the necessary steps to prepare for and plan for an earthquake event,” said Patrick Sheehan, Director of TEMA. “We don’t know when the next earthquakes will happen, but we can prepare and learn how to protect yourself, your family, your business and your community before the earth begins to shake.

During the exercise, the participants practiced the Drop, Cover, Hold On technique, a suitable self-protection measure in the event of an earthquake.

The actions of this technique are: fall to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, or cover your head and neck with your arms, then hold until the shaking stops.

Consumers should remember that traditional home and business insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage. The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance reminds consumers that earthquake insurance is available for purchase in Tennessee from licensed insurance providers.
