Pahala Post Office Reopens After Mauna Loa Earthquake

(BIVN) – The Bahala Post Office has announced that it will reopen for business as usual on Friday, October 21.

The post office’s retail lobby in a remote town of Caye has been temporarily closed since last Friday in the wake of earthquakes under the southeast flank of Mauna Loa volcano. The seismic activity caused damage to some indoor lighting units in the post office.

Before reopening, USPS leadership is said to have conducted a “thorough assessment of the facility to ensure it was safe for its employees and customers.”

“We want to thank our customers for their patience and flexibility during our temporary closure,” Gina Gomez, Postal Manager of Pahala, said in a press release. “We are excited and thrilled to be able to reopen our facility and resume full service to the Bahala community.”

Earthquakes — in particular, 4.6 on the Richter scale followed 24 seconds later by a greater magnitude — 5.0 — combined to create a “shake of longer duration and possibly greater intensity than any of the earthquakes that would have occurred alone,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. Some minor damage has been reported in the Bahala area.

The scientists said the seismic sequence appears to be related to “modifications along the southeast side of Mauna Loa”. The USGS added that the activity had no immediate impact on the ongoing disturbances below the summit of Mauna Loa.
