LOS ANGELES (CABC) – The state is once again working to make sure Californians are prepared for the next big earthquake.

This year’s Great California ShakeOut was held at 10:20 a.m. Thursday with millions taking part in earthquake drills at work, school or home.

Since the launch of the first Great California ShakeOut 15 years ago, experts have been collecting data on the advantages of cementing or sealing older buildings.

In 2015, an ordinance requiring the modification of soft-story or timber-framed homes and apartment complexes entered the city of Los Angeles.

More than a billion dollars has been spent on modifying thousands of structures.

“The act led to the retrofitting of 8,000 buildings. It is home to 117,000 housing units or roughly a quarter of a million people,” Keith Porter/The Catastrophic Loss Reduction Institute.

According to data from the Catastrophic Loss Reduction Institute, the Los Angeles Retrofit Act will save more than $40 billion in earthquake damage, prevent 28,000 deaths and injuries, and prevent the loss of approximately 65,000 homes.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones believes that more cities in California should consider earthquake retrofit ordinances.

“Eight cities have joined Los Angeles, and there are 180 more cities around Southern California that could benefit from it, and that’s what we intend to do with this information,” she said.

In addition, there is a government grant program that helps property owners with up to $3,000 upgrade their home or apartment complex. LA-area owner Hiru Tejwani said it was worth looking into.

“Our building was built in ’87 and ’88, so I’m not sure if it would qualify, but I’ll look into it,” he said.
