Earthquake survivors plan to protest ‘denial’ of plots

Survivors of the devastating October 2005 earthquake in Balakot Ciel here on Saturday announced street protests against both the federal and provincial governments over what they described as neither plotting nor rebuilding more than 100 schools.

“We have decided to resume our agitation and go to a protest demonstration on October 28 against the federal and provincial governments,” Mian Muhammad Ashraf, head of the Balakot New City Movement told reporters.

He presided over a marathon meeting attended by merchants, transporters, lawyers and people from different walks of life in Balakot.

The participants also held a symbolic protest outside the meeting venue to demand the allocation of plots of land in the New Balakot City Housing Project.

Mr. Ashraf said earthquake survivors celebrated the 17th anniversary of the disaster in their temporary shelters earlier in the month, which opened the eyes of the federal and provincial governments.

He claimed that the federal government diverted more than $5 billion donated by the international community for rehabilitation and reconstruction activities, but disaster victims continued to live in small two-room shelters.

Mr. Ashraf said earthquake survivors will block Mansehra and Naran Galkhad Roads on October 28 through a peaceful protest.

He said that a protest sit-in would also be organized and that he would go on a hunger strike if the demands were not met.

“The government should immediately allocate plots of land in the New Balakot City Housing Project for the earthquake-affected families, otherwise they will walk in the federal and local capitals,” he said.

Issuance of Letters of Appointment: The Ministry of Education has issued letters of appointment for 251 primary school teachers to fill vacancies across Mansehra district.

“All primary school teachers, who have been given letters of appointment, will serve in the vacant seats in public schools of the various union boards,” Provincial Education Officer Rihanna Jasmine told reporters here on Saturday.

Ms. Yasmin said the teachers were selected “only on merit” as they first took written exams conducted by the Education Testing and Evaluation Agency and attended interviews later.

She said the selection committee conducted the exercise for appointments on the 12th basic pay scale.

The DEO said newly hired teachers were told to report to assignment schools within the designated period to prevent students from losing learning.

“The government wants a quality education for female students and that is the reason why all the vacant positions in primary schools are filled across the region,” she said.

On the other hand, the traffic police launched a campaign to overload passenger buses and imposed fines on dozens of drivers. They also seized several cars on charges of violating the law.
