Mauna Loa is not erupting and there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time. However, Mauna Loa remains in a state of increasing turmoil as evidenced by increased earthquake activity and summit swell, according to a daily update from the Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

“The current disturbance is likely driven by a resurgent intrusion of magma 2-5 miles (3-8 kilometres) below the summit of Mauna Loa. Monitoring data shows no significant changes in the past day,” according to the activity summary.

GPS instruments at the top and on the sides of Mauna Loa continue to measure inflation at high rates since mid-September. However, the clinometers at the summit do not show significant surface deformation over the past week,” according to HVO.

HVO reports that concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as fumarole temperatures, remain stable at the summit and in the sulfur cone at the top of the SWR. Webcam and thermal camera views have not shown any changes to the volcanic landscape of Mauna Loa over the past week.

According to HVO, the current locations of earthquakes and deformation do not necessarily mean that the next eruption will occur there. Mauna Loa remains on high alert level from ADVISORY/YELLOW. The current increase in activity “does not indicate that progress to a volcanic eruption is confirmed, nor are there indications that an eruption is imminent.”

HVO notes that Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on our planet and covers half of the island of Hawaii. According to the agency, “eruptions tend to produce massive, fast-moving lava flows that can affect communities on the eastern and western sides of the island.”

“Mauna Loa eruptions typically begin at the summit, and within minutes to months from the start of the eruption, they can migrate to either the northeastern or southwestern rift zone, or radial vents on the north side,” HVO reports.

According to HVO, since the first well-documented eruption in 1843, the volcano has erupted 33 times with periods between eruptions ranging from months to decades. Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984.
