Quantum Leap Episode 6 Review: What a Disaster! (free spoiler)

If Quantum Leap’s original allure was to see a character we love, Sam Beckett, travel back in time to fix history for the better, episode six of the 2022 sequel seems to have missed the note. Last week, I wrote about how the show seems to be falling into some sort of climax in the TV/streaming wars trap of needing a fast-paced, immersive seasonal puzzle, while the original was designed to be episodic, and as a result, it often feels like we’re watching two shows in one time. This week’s episode looks like it’s made up its mind: 2022 is what matters, and the date to fix is just an obstacle.

“What a tragedy!” (I’ll resist overlapping on the title) Begins with the last few moments of the previous episode, “Salvation or the Statue”, where we’re introduced to another mystery item from 2022 (because it’s spoiler-free, I won’t say exactly what it is in case anyone can’t read from catching up with the season so far). And it’s clear from the start that the episode will focus on the current Quantum Leap team dealing with the aforementioned mystery.

Ben (Raymond Lee) runs through a crowd after an earthquake | Quantum leap

Then Ben jumped to San Francisco in 1989, in the moments before the famous earthquake. This time, he is… a man with marital problems. That’s pretty much how much we know about the guy who jumped on it. Poor Ben comes along just as the man’s wife, Naomi (played by the more distinguished Joel State) talks through their cases, leading to their divorce filing. Then an earthquake hits. Ben then goes looking for the couple’s missing son in the aftermath of the disaster.

This is it. This is a history setting adventure. There’s really nothing to spoil when it comes to this part, because honestly, nothing happens but a lot of disaster movie-style stunts.

Even Ben doesn’t seem too interested in what’s going on in 1989. His interest is centered on his mother’s scattered flashbacks, which leads to some wonderful emotional moments with Addison, but really leads to the feeling that the whole earthquake is just a backdrop. the noise.

Magic (Ernie Hudson) and Ian (Mason Alexander Park) looking at their computer screen | Quantum leap

Meanwhile, the episode’s attention has been focused on the 2022 Quantum Leap team following clues to decipher what happened at the end of “Salvation or Bust” (again, trying not to spoil it for anyone who didn’t see it). A lot of theories have been put forth about it, and a lot of high-tech sci-fi equipment is being used.

The show has done a great job of introducing an interesting cast of regular characters that you can really care about. The problem is that they attract so much focus, especially with the big season of mystery around the corner, that it’s really hard to get emotionally invested in guest stars. Despite Staite’s solid performance, it was hard to see her character as, at best, a brace for Ben to deal with his family issues, and at worst, background noise.

Addison (Caitlin Bassett) watches Ben (Raymond Lee) make a phone call in 1989

“What a tragedy!” He makes a valiant attempt to hold the heart and soul of Quantum Leap, shining optimism and a good working attitude that is so comforting to watch and makes you believe that the world could be a better place. There is a lot going on around it.

The show is still very early stage, so it is possible that he will discover a better balance between past and present in the upcoming episodes. Or maybe you’re totally inclined to the sci-fi mystery element, the one you seem most interested in, and adventures in the past will just become backgrounds. In that case, would it still be a quantum leap?
