NBC’s sci-fi drama “Quantum Leap” follows the story of Dr. Ben Song, who is leaping into the past with no recollection of why and where he intends to go. His team back home, including his fiancée, Addison, are trying to figure out why Ben took such a huge step without telling anyone about it. In the process, they discover that Ben has been keeping a lot of secrets, making it very difficult to decipher his intentions behind time travel. In this episode, the scope of the Quantum Leap extends beyond Ben and becomes a new player under the spotlight. What does this mean for Ben’s travels in time? Let’s find out. spoilers ahead

Ben Song’s next leap takes him to 1989, San Francisco. This is the day of the catastrophic earthquake that resulted in loss of life. This time, Ben finds himself in a man named John on the verge of a breakdown. His wife, Naomi, wants a divorce, and while they are discussing their future, an earthquake hits. Ben soon discovers that he is there to save the lives of John and Naomi’s son Jason.

When Jason finds out that his parents were separated, he returns to their old neighborhood. During the earthquake, this building collapsed and Jason died. Things get personal for Ben when he finds out that Jason and Naomi are not on good terms. When his memories resurface, he ties her relationship to the one he had with his mother. He feels guilty that he kept his mother at a distance when she was alive, and doesn’t want the same for Jason. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to fix things up between himself and Naomi.

Back home, Jane, Magic and Ian discover the identity of another time traveler, LiberX. It turns out he’s a Marine named Richard Martinez, but nothing about him suggests that he’s related to time travel. Not yet at least.

Quantum Leap Episode 6 Final: Is Ben trying to go to the future?

Despite the secrecy behind Ben’s endeavours, his team has been slowly progressing toward some answers. Or so they thought. Ian discovered that Ben’s jumps weren’t random. In fact, they were timed in such a way as to give him enough momentum to jump further into the past. This would have helped the team figure out where Ben was going, which in turn would give them context as to why he was going there. However, this changes after the arrival of Leaper X.

Jin thinks that if Leaper X is traveling through time and they see him through the filming room, he looks a lot like Ben, then he should also show them what he is instead of who he jumped into. Now that they know what he looks like, they ran his photo through facial recognition software, and the name Richard Martinez came up. Jane and Magic visit him, but it turns out Martinez has no idea about the Quantum Leap Project or time travel.

Looking at the whole situation, Jane suggests three possibilities for their predicament. The first is that another country has also developed a time travel project, and Martinez was the leap in this field. The second is that some private companies have been working on it secretly. The third option, which might seem farfetched in any other situation but seems to be the most reasonable option at the moment, is that Martinez has jumped from the future. While Magic and his team may be in charge of the project at the moment, they have no idea what it will look like in the future. They don’t know who will run things and how many people will be jumping in by then. Given that Martinez has not yet made the jump, he may become part of the project in the future.

Until now, the team had been looking back and was only focused in that direction. But now they realize that one can travel in the future as well, and the presence of another time traveler, most likely from the future, suggests that they may have been limited in the way they perceive things up until now. Ian wonders if Ben’s path is oriented not to the past but to the future.

Given that Ben made some changes to the program before his jump and the team hasn’t yet figured out what those changes are, they have no way of knowing if he fixed his destination sometime in the past or the future. If he is truly on his way to the future, that makes his team’s task of figuring out his intentions all the more difficult.

As for his travels in the past, they had a context for Ben’s life. All the events have already happened and they have all the resources on hand to study a particular day or event and work from there. But for the future, they are completely in the dark. They can’t understand why Ben would take such a stern action. One thing is for sure though. It can’t be a good thing to lead him away from his happy present to an uncertain future.
