San Francisco Bay Area was hit by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, causing delays on some commuter trains. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The USGS said the quake, which struck at 11:42 a.m., had an epicenter 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of San Jose, at a depth of about 4 miles (6 kilometers). The area is high country about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of downtown San Francisco.

Lucy Jones, a veteran California seismologist, told KNTV-TV that the quake occurred on the Calaveras Fault, one of eight major faults in the Bay Area.

“The Calaveras Fault is a fault that tends to produce smaller earthquakes,” Jones said.

In a social media post, Jones said it was the largest earthquake in the Bay Area since a 6.0-magnitude quake in the wine country of Napa in 2014.

The 138-mile (220 km) Calaveras Fault is a major branch of the San Andreas Fault, Jones said, stretching from San Juan Bautista in the south to San Ramon in the north.

Rich Constantine, the mayor of Morgan Hill, a city neighboring San Jose, said he was in his kitchen when the “long and steady” earthquake struck.

“We had a tire in the house and everything was vibrating but once it stopped, there was no damage,” he said.

Constantine said Morgan Hill City Council and other city offices were evacuated, but that everyone was back in business soon after.

People reported feeling the quake as far south as the scenic Big Sur coast, 75 miles (120 km) south of the epicenter in Joseph Grant Ranch County Park, a huge natural area.

This was followed by a 3.1 aftershock about five minutes later, according to the USGS.

Several passenger train companies, including Cal Train and the Bay Area Rapid Transit System, known as BART, have carried trains to check for damages. BART returned to normal service in the early afternoon.
