Earthquake shakes the Gulf region today

SAN JOSE, CA (CRON) – A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Bay Area just before noon Tuesday.

While it was the region’s largest earthquake in eight years — since the 6.0-magnitude Shaker struck Napa in 2014 — several agencies across the Bay Area report that no damage or even emergency calls have been reported.

The earthquake struck the Calaveras Fault, which caused a 6.2-magnitude earthquake at Morgan Hill in 1984. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake were on the San Andreas Fault.

The epicenter of this earthquake, which occurred at 11:42 a.m., was south of Mount Hamilton, in the hills east of San Jose, at Seven Trees, a census-designated place that San Jose annexed in 2009.

A satellite with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale struck a distance of one kilometer to the east at 11:47 am

The San Jose Fire Department, following its seismic policy, “verifies employees, surveys their immediate response area [and] Inspect stations and devices to ensure they are ready to respond to any emergencies.”

Mineta San Jose International Airport reports that the entire airport campus has been checked and that “Operations have not been affected in any way. Stay safe and have a great break from your day!”

The San Jose Police Department tweeted that there were no reports of damage or injuries to date.

She continued, “We will update you if that changes.”

Governor Gavin Newsom’s office is providing assistance.

“CAL OES [Office of Emergency Services] He is actively coordinating with the local authorities in the area to assess any damage or initial problems that arose as a result of this earthquake and to provide any assistance required from the state level,” he tweeted.

Public transportation resumes across the region

Public transportation agencies, such as Bay Area Rapid Transit, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, and the agency that operates ferries, have announced changes to plans due to the earthquake.

For example, the San Francisco Bay Area Emergency Transportation Authority reported that ferry departures will be delayed 10 minutes as stations are checked after the earthquake.

BART trains were initially suspended for five minutes. Do not run at low speed.

“We currently have 57 trains in service,” Bart said in a tweet. “In the aftermath of the earthquake, all trains except for those on Metro Transbay hold out for 5 minutes. This is to ensure that a larger earthquake does not follow. Once the trains are released, operators visually check the tracks at low speed.”

Caltrain and the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority operate at low speeds. Santa Clara VTA halted until post-earthquake inspection was completed.

No tsunami warning

The National Weather Service announced that no tsunami is expected as a result of the earthquake.

The San Francisco Fire Department said via a tweet that no damage was reported in San Francisco due to the earthquake. The city was famous for being destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906.

Aftershocks continued to rock the area in the aftermath of the earthquake. A 3.6-degree initial aftermath struck in the Seven Trees area shortly after 3 p.m., according to the USGS.
