Tuesday’s earthquake hit the Calaveras Fault.
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday. The epicenter was located within Joseph de Grant County Park, near Mount Hamilton in Santa Clara County. The earthquake, which likely occurred in the Calaveras Fault, struck at a depth of 8.4 kilometers (five miles) according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). According to USGS data, the earthquake occurred in a strike slip fault.
As of the time of this report, no accidents of damage or deaths have been reported. As of 4:25 pm (PDT), more than 22,000 responses have been submitted in the USGS’ “Have you felt it” system. The bay area felt light shaking, including San Francisco, Salinas, Merced, Fresno and San Rafael. A weak shaking was felt up to Stockton. The area around the epicenter immediately experienced a moderate tremor. The shallow earthquake depth and proximity to a major metro area likely contributed to the number of people affected.
ShakeAlert detects an earthquake within milliseconds after it has started and alerts those likely to experience shaking above a certain intensity. A ShakeAlert earthquake early warning was issued for Tuesday’s earthquake. Delivered via app and phone across the Gulf region. For some, the alert arrived just before the vibration.

Despite the moderate magnitude of the earthquake, some in the Bay Area felt no shaking, including Anuj Shetty, a student on the Stanford campus. He said the others in his class felt shivering.

The magnitude 5.1 force struck along the Calaveras Fault, USGS geophysicist Anne-Marie Baltay said in a recorded statement. The USGS is responding to the event and will continue to analyze data and aftershocks as they occur.

The Calaveras Fault runs along the eastern side of the San Jose metro area. It is an area of active and right lateral slip fault, which forms a major branch of the San Andreas fault system. The San Andreas River runs roughly parallel and to the west of the Calaveras Fault, up the San Francisco Peninsula. Calaveras, along with the San Andreas, Concord, San Gregorio, and Hayward Rodgers Creek faults, absorb the northward movement of the Pacific plate tectonic after the North American plate.
The Calaveras Mountains have a high probability of a superficial ruptured earthquake in the next 30 years, says Kim Plezniuk, a seismologist at San Jose State University. The most famous recent earthquake on the Calaveras Fault was the 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake of magnitude 6.2, which caused extensive damage to buildings in the area. The 1984 earthquake struck roughly the same epicenter as today. This site is at the intersection between the Calaveras and the Hayward Fault, says Plesniuk. The Hayward Fault tends to accommodate movement through tectonic creep, while calaveras erupt in earthquakes, she says. Some consider the two faults to be persistent and capable of generating a 7.5-magnitude earthquake. Calaveras has also hosted more recent earthquakes, such as the 5.5-magnitude alum earthquake in 2007.
The Calaveras Fault has hosted other earthquakes in the recent past.
The Bay Area has a long history of moderate to large earthquakes due to the San Andreas fault and branching fault systems. Last month, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Rosa, California (north of San Jose) at the Rodgers Creek Fault. This widely felt earthquake occurred 5.6 kilometers (three miles) below the surface and was followed less than a minute later by a 4.3-magnitude aftershock.
An aftershock of magnitude 3.1 was followed by an earthquake Tuesday near San Jose, and more aftershocks may follow. “As more time passes, the probability of a [larger] And in the event of a future earthquake, Blesniuk adds, experts agree that the best course of action is projection, coverage and coherence.
