Google is tracking its own rings of fire

Many earthquake-prone countries have an effective national early warning system that allows their citizens to take action seconds, perhaps even minutes before the ground-level shaking begins. That’s great for those countries, but most of the world – including most of the US – doesn’t have the systems in place to facilitate such advanced warnings. Despite this, Google is rolling out the Android Earthquake Alert System, which provides a literal surface-level warning for device owners in earthquake zones, around the world. Yesterday, the US had to see it in action.

The USGS recorded a M5.1 earthquake that originated at the southern edge of Mount Hamilton, about 10 miles east of San Jose, California, at 11:42 a.m. local time. It was a good shake that could break some windows and sidewalks, but nothing catastrophic on a large scale – especially in a country where building codes for new and existing developments require earthquake resistance.

However, it has generated enough traffic to cause a stir on Android devices across the heart of Silicon Valley.

In the US, the Android Earthquake Alert System has been powering the USGS’s ShakeAlert system across California, Oregon and Washington since 2020. But more recently, Google has been working to identify seismic activity by crowdsourcing accelerometer data from users Android devices. The P wave refers to the first perceptible signs of a tremor having effects on gaseous, liquid and solid materials while the S wave represents the strongest shear force or vibration of the event, traveling more slowly through the ground.

By sensing the time-space trend in vibration devices, Google says it will be able to warn more users in advance of an upcoming vibration — even in areas without a proper early warning system.

In this case, it is likely that everyone who was notified of this earthquake has received this message from ShakeAlert. But it’s definitely great to see how a parallel Google solution works, all things being equal in an aquarium.

Google’s AEAS is expected to be activated in most countries by the end of this year. The hope here is to save lives, so if one person is able to take action thanks to an alert they might not have otherwise received, that’s a sure win.
