Earthquake Safety Tips: What to do in the event of events like the 5.1 San Francisco earthquake
Fox Weather reported that a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area, California, shortly before noon on Tuesday, October 25.
People as far away as San Diego and Lake Tahoe have reported feeling quakes from an earthquake — and another one could follow.
“There is a 67 percent chance of a larger major shock occurring within the next week,” Kimberly Plesniuk, a seismologist at San Jose State University, told FOX Weather.

So what can people do to keep themselves safe during an earthquake?
A March 2020 document published by FEMA as part of its “Get ready for America” campaign provided tips for staying safe before, during and after the earthquake.

“Earthquakes can bring mild to violent tremors and can occur anytime and anywhere,” the agency said in the document.
“While earthquakes can occur across the country, countries in specific seismic zones” have a much higher risk, the agency said.

It’s important to have a contingency plan in place, according to Ready.gov, a safety preparedness website set up by the US government.
The site advised creating a family emergency communications plan that had an “out of state contact.”
The website said it was important to “plan where to meet if you two broke up.”

The site also advises preparing a supply kit with enough food and water “for several days” along with a flashlight, fire extinguisher and whistle.
Before an earthquake strikes, people should take steps to secure furniture — including mirrors and bookcases — that could injure or kill someone if such objects fell, FEMA said.

“Most injuries and injuries during an earthquake occur when: people fall while trying to walk or run during vibration; when they are injured by falling, flying, sliding household items or non-structural debris; and/or when they are struck or trapped by collapsing walls or other parts of the building “.

To prevent this, FEMA suggests going on a “hazard hunt” to identify potential areas that should be secured in the event of an earthquake.
This includes bookcases, dressers, mirrors, frames, and cabinet doors.

“Take time now to protect important documents and take photos or videos of your belongings,” FEMA said, noting that this will make it easier to work with an insurance company later.
Before an earthquake, the agency recommends that people practice the “drop, cover and hang” technique in the event of an earthquake.

This technique involves falling on the hands and knees, covering the head and neck with arms, and hanging on something sturdy until the earthquake is over.
“During an earthquake, reduce your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place,” the document reads.

“If you’re inside, stay there until the shaking stops and you’re sure it’s safe to go outside.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said anyone outdoors during the earthquake should try to stay away from buildings, electrical wires and street lights.
The document reads: “Once you open it, drop it, cover, and keep waiting.”
FEMA said it may be advisable to enter a building to avoid exposure to debris.
After the quake is over, the agency noted, smaller “aftershocks” may occur.

A person trapped after an earthquake should not move or scream, as this increases the risk of inhaling dust.
Shouting should be done “only as a last resort.”
“Press a tube or wall, or use a whistle, if available, so that lifeguards can locate you,” FEMA added.

An earthquake may damage utility lines.
So FEMA advises checking gas, sewage, and water lines after an earthquake to make sure they’re working properly.
Because of the risks of gas fires, the agency said, no one should use a lighter or matches near an affected area.
