Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near San Jose, California

An earthquake shook the Gulf of California on Tuesday.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the 5.1-magnitude earthquake was centered 12 miles east of San Jose in the Calaveras Fault. The Calaveras Fault extends 80 miles from South Hollister to the Danville and Knut Creek area. It was reported that the quake was at a depth of 8.4 km and struck around 11:42 a.m. PST.

USGS data shows that the area experienced a 3.1-magnitude aftershock at 11:47 a.m. and a 3.5-magnitude aftershock in the same region at 3:08 p.m.

According to UGCS, no damages or injuries were immediately reported.

Dr. Anne-Marie Baltay, a USGS seismologist, declared in a post-quake video that there is a 1 in 100 chance of an aftershock greater than 5 the following day; There could be 10 to 15 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or more in the next week.”

According to Dr. Baltay, “aftershocks of this size and duration are perfectly normal for an event of this type.”

The USGS reported an earthquake in the Calaveras system in October 2007 and projected an 11 percent probability for the area to produce an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater in the next 30 years.

According to Brian Ferguson, deputy director of crisis communications and public affairs in the California governor’s office of emergency services, about 95,000 people received advance notice from Earthquake Warning California, the state’s early warning system, before the shaking began.

In an update after Tuesday’s events, Ferguson said things were “good so far” and that the organization was continuing to see what steps could be taken to keep the area safe.
