Android phones are better than iPhones at earthquake alerts

Android devices reportedly sent earthquake alerts faster than iPhones in California after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Santa Clara this week.

Anecdotal evidence from social media users suggests that Android phones are more efficient at sending earthquake alerts than iPhones. Both Android phones and iPhones have a built-in earthquake detection function that can detect tremors before shock waves strike and then send notifications to help users take cover. While smartphone-based earthquake alerts only provide a few seconds of warning before shaking begins, they still give people a chance to protect themselves and their loved ones from danger.

Although scientists have yet to figure out how to accurately predict earthquakes, current technology can give people in earthquake-prone areas a few extra seconds to protect themselves during these emergencies. One earthquake early warning (EEW) system is the ShakeAlert system, which was created by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in conjunction with the California Geological Survey, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and several California universities. It can detect and send earthquake warnings in California, Oregon and Washington.

Dave Burke, Google’s Vice President of Engineering for Android, tweeted a GIF showing how Android devices acted as mini seismometers during an earthquake, detecting tremors before people could even feel them.

Android and iPhone users are believed to have received notifications about the earthquake, but many have since posted on social media, claiming that their Android devices prompted these alerts several seconds before they felt the earthquakes. On the other hand, those with iPhones seem to have received the notifications after the tremors have already started. Some users with both Android and iOS devices have categorically stated that their Android device warned them of the earthquake a few seconds before it happened, while they did not receive any warnings on their iPhone.

Earthquake Alerts System for Android devices is based on the Android Earthquake Alerts System, launched in 2020. It is a free service that detects earthquakes around the world and alerts Android users before they start shaking. The system works in partnership with ShakeAlert in California, Oregon and Washington to receive data from the latter’s seismic sensors and send alerts based on that data. To detect earthquakes in the rest of the world, Google uses crowdsourcing data from Android devices that can detect vibrations using their accelerometers. The company says it collects such data from more than two billion devices globally, and uses that information to see if an earthquake occurs in a particular area before notifications are sent out on Android devices.
