5.1 Bay Area Earthquake Strike – Horizon View

According to the USGS, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the Bay Area Tuesday morning, with its epicenter just 12 miles east of San Jose.

The earthquake occurred at 11:42 am local time, followed by three aftershocks. The 2.9 earthquake occurred just five minutes after the initial earthquake, and the 3.9 and 2.9 earthquakes occurred a few hours later. While no major damage was initially reported, the shaking was widespread and was felt by thousands of people.

Reports came in from as far as Sacramento and Sonoma, with 18,000 civilian reports within an hour of the earthquake. However, Japan’s Justice and Development Fund has not received any reports of damage or injury, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The 5.1 earthquake is the largest to hit the Gulf region since the 2014 Napa earthquake, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. 5.1 happened on the Calaveras Fault, fortunately leaving the worst tremors for sparsely populated areas.

The MyShake app, an earthquake early warning system, was able to provide a bit of a warning for remote areas. The warning ranged from about two seconds for those closest to the epicenter to about 18 seconds for residents as far as San Francisco.

The quake also halted travel departments in the Gulf region for hours after the quake while they were checking their routes for damage. Fortunately, no damage was found, and normal operation resumed soon after the inspection.
